Pike in the basin

This photo was taken some time in 2008 but I only just got hold of it (unfortunately a young one with scissors got there first, but you can see what it is.) It shows the size of one of the pike living in or near the canal basin. |

- 4 Jan 09 We've recently (in the last week) been seeing a Goosander (we think) on the canal near the bridge at Viewforth. It's noticeable because it dives and swims quite a long way just under the water. Otherwise it looks a little bit like a Mallard duck, only with a white and black body.
- Jan 09 There have been cormorants on the canal. One report is of there having been six spread out along the canal. There were certainly two together in the canal basin on one occasion. Photos of cormorant on the Wildlife 2008 page. See also Wolfette's photos
