Hello =-).

My name is Laura and I am posting this on behalf of Re-Union (www.re-union.org.uk/) [which some of you will know already]. I am currently working for them for the next few weeks as part of my Community Education degree. Along with two volunteers I am gathering information about the union canal, along with photographs, to add to a scrap book that will be shown to groups who come on board the boat/used for purposes of that kind. I am posting this in the hope that if anyone has any photos of the Union canal that we can use that you will Email them to me and give permission for Re-Union to use them in the scrap book. I am also appealing for any electronic information or points of interest you have about the canal. At the moment I can find a lot of history, but less about the environment around the canal (trees and birds and all the pretty ecology).

I am also personally interested in adding people's memories of the canal to the scrapbook. If you would like to Email me your favourite memory of the canal, along with your first name and where you're from, or if you're a local, something along those lines, that would be very helpful. Then I can add your favourite memory of the canal to the scrapbook and it will be read by community groups who use the Re-Union canal boat.

You can contact me at moc.liamelgoog|eriugamrual#moc.liamelgoog|eriugamrual or ku.gro.noinu-er|ybba#ku.gro.noinu-er|ybba, or alternatively you can call us on the number advertised on the website.

Thanks for your time,

Laura.

Forum category: General discussion / Canal life
Forum thread: Memories of the Union canal / any information about it

I received this message through the private message system and thought others might be interested…

………..
Hi there!

I'm …, and I live near the Edinburgh Union Canal. I was emailing an American friend of mine about the boat they found in the canal in 2004 (I think). I came across this page, and you wondering about the boat. Well, bad news about the boat, unlike what the other guy said "it is still there", well, it's not.

The boat was destroyed, I seen it happening, they had 4 skips, and using chainsaws to take the boat apart. Not a good thing to see! They done this because it was simply too big! There weren't any museums that could hold such a large thing, and it was a danger to boats in the area if they had kept it in the canal. It was also in the way of the housing development that is now there.

Well, sorry you had to hear like this!

……………

Thanks for the message. I have had a separate and independent confirmation of this too. Personally I'm sorry it wasn't put on the bank as an object of interest.

Forum category: General discussion / Canal life
Forum thread: What happened to the old canal boat?

Doesn't BW monitor water quality?
Maybe they do not monitor to the same level of detail as SEPA does, but they should be managing the water quality to some extend.
Maybe they do not want to publish the results… but I would expect the Union Canal to be quite good, so I don't think there is anything they should be ashamed of.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Water quality

I'm now going to check that the page is linked from the events page, and if it isn't I'll add that in too. Hope that's helpful.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Case Studies Wine School

When the major work on the canal was taking place beside the bridge at Viewforth, back in 2004, an old barge was discovered. There's a press article about the find here. Does anyone know more about the final theories about this barge, and about whether it was eventually broken up?

Forum category: General discussion / Canal life
Forum thread: What happened to the old canal boat?

While we were walking along the canal this afternoon one of my children was using a magnet to find 'treasure' - such as old nails and the like.

Something surprising happened when we reached the wide gravel path on the west side of the Leamington Lift Bridge (see place on Google maps) - the gravel stuck to the magnet. This happened all the way between the Leamington Bridge and the Viewforth Bridge (we didn't try elsewhere). I'd love to hear theories about why this might be.

Forum category: General discussion / Canal life
Forum thread: Magnetic gravel

This isn't really about the canal, but I just thought that other people might have been wondering what was going on with the old aircraft flying around and around over Edinburgh today.

There's some information here, which led me to the information here and there's a photo someone took today here.

It looks like it's an old DC-3 'Dakota' taking passengers for a final trip before this becomes disallowed (going only on the information given on these pages).

Forum category: General discussion / Canal life
Forum thread: What's that aircraft doing?
